Well this all depends on the content but generally a site needs no more than 5mb if it is just html, if you intend on adding flash to the site then 10-15mb is needed depending on the size of the flash as well as how many flash items you are using. if you intend to add downloads to your site on an ftp account then more is needed, it all depends on your usage needs.

as for bandwidth

This is an age old question that people want 3Gb or unlimited bandwidth

but the website never makes it past 10mb let alone 1 gig.

www.webstyles.co.za is 1mb in size on html alone, and the monthly usage for bandwidth is never over 50 mb with more than 3000 hits a month.

if you require any hosting of an existing site or want to start your own website then visit http://www.webstyles.co.za/starter.html

Webstyles.co.za offers 3 packages for you to choose from

the first of which is the Starter Package.

with this you can use the full 50mb for just your website
or use the additional space for email accounts which can be forwarded to an email you check regularly, you can use the space to setup a blog, forum, ecommerce site, helpdesk or anything you wish.

whether all for email, mailing lists, blogs, ecommerce pages, website or any other use you may find. the space is yours.

the only real difference is the space you choose

You may be asking what is SEO?

SEO is a method of setting up your website that makes it search engine friendly and leads to a high page rank and puts you on the first page of the search engine according to your key words.

We will begin a series on how to do this.

Firstly the structure of your web page should be uncluttered. The general rule is if you battle to navigate easily so will the search engine.

So keep it simple, secondly put the “mark of the web” tag into your website that lets the search engine know what it is looking at, whether html, xhtml or so on

When setting up a website you need to think of a URL name that contains what you are about, for example www.handbags.com for a place that sells handbags and not www.fashions.com

next you need to name each page exactly what the page is about and the keywords you want to use in the page need to be in the keyword tag.

format your page tags in the following order “title” then your “keyword” and finally the “description” tags.

Contrary to belief content is king, the more pages you have with valuable content inside the better as people then stay longer on your page and this boosts your page ranking, as well as content that changes a few times a year.

secondly enternal links to your website from reliable sites with similar content play a part in boosting your page ranking.

you can check your page rank for your website at http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php

avoid “spamming” submissions to google as this puts your website in a bad light. rather submit your website manually. Add a sitemap to your google profile so that google can map all your pages in your site and possibly make multiple links to your content.

to help you with all of this below is a guide.

search engine optimization starter guide:

Two weeks ago, Google released a so-called search engine optimization starter guide for webmasters.

Of course, the Google document does not tell you how your website can be listed on Google’s first result page. It is more a checklist of things that you shouldn’t do if you want Google to index your web pages.

If you avoid the following things, it will be easier for Google to index your web pages:

1. Things that you should not do in your web page titles
Do not use web page titles that have no relation to the content on the page.
Do not use general web page titles such as “Untitled” or “New Page”.
Do not use the same title for more than one web page.
Do not use very long titles that do not help your users.
Do not stuff unnecessary keywords in your title tag.

2. Things that you should not do in your meta tags
Do not use meta description tags that have no relation to the web page content.
Do not use general descriptions such as “My web page” or “About kittens”.
Do not use only keywords in the description.
Do not copy the entire content of the web page in the meta description tag.
Do not use the same description tag on more than one web page.

3. Things that you should not do with your URLs
Do not use lengthy URLs with unnecessary parameters and session IDs.
Do not overuse keywords in your URL (kittens-cute-kittens-all-about-kittens.htm).
Do not use too many sub directories (../here/there/down/2/buried/deep/down/content.htm).
Do not use directory names that have no relation to the web page content.

4. Things that you should not do with your website navigation
Do not show the same content with different domains or sub-domains.
Do not mix www. and non-www. versions of your URLs in your internal links.
Do not use capitalization in your URLs.
Do not link every page of your website to every other page of your website.
Do not over-segment your web page content. Users should be able to access any content with a few clicks.
Do not base your entire navigation on drop-down menus or images.

5. Things that you should not do with broken links
Do not use broken links on your web page.
Do not block search engines from indexing your 404 not found pages.
Do not use non-descriptive 404 not found pages. Better use 404 web pages that help your website visitors to find the correct page on your website.
Do not use a 404 not found web page design that is not consistent with the rest of your website.

6. Things that you should not do with your web page content
Do not use text with many spelling and grammar errors on your pages.
Do not embed text in images because search engines cannot read it.
Do not write text about varying topics on a single page without paragraphs, sub-headings or layout separation.
Do not copy content from other web pages that has no extra value to your website visitors.

Off page SEO:

start publishing ezines to boost your website page rank and update all your content on a regular basis to keep clients ans prospective clients attention on you and away from the opposition.
